NEW YORK — Japanese food plation kit has become a hot commodity, even for the country’s food producers.
And now the kits are available to buy in convenience stores across the country, making it a little easier to get the kits, said Toshio Nishimura, director of the Japan Food Plating and Preparing Lab.
Nishimura said the kits contain food-grade ingredients, which is good for people who have to eat on a regular basis and for food producers who can’t afford the pricier ingredients found in more expensive products.
The kits are now being sold in convenience store outlets as well as supermarkets.
There are more than 200 different types of food plated in Japan, said Nishimura.
Most are made of flour and oil, he said, but some are made from pork, eggs and milk.
They can be used in soup, soup stock and desserts, he added.
Nishihara said the new kits can be bought in supermarkets or on e-commerce sites such as Amazon.com.
People who have trouble ordering food items because of a lack of space and supplies can order the kits online from the same places, he told CBS News.
Japan’s food shortages have been increasing since last year, when a deadly typhoon swept through the country.
More than 1,000 people died, and more than 1 million have been displaced.
Nashimura said there are some food products that don’t meet government standards and aren’t sold in restaurants.
But he said he’s not worried about the kits being too difficult to get.
